What do Speech Pathologists do?

Speech pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders. They work with people who have difficulties with:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Understanding language
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Social skills
  • Stuttering

People can have difficulty communicating for a wide range of reasons. They may have encountered developmental delays, suffered a stroke or brain injury, or have a learning disability. Cerebral palsy, dementia and hearing loss can also adversely affect people’s speech and ability to use and understand language.

This is where speech pathologists come in – it is their task to identify the root of an individual’s communication problem/s, and to offer a constructive, scientifically supported path to recovery or improvement.

That being said, speech pathology is a very broad and wide-ranging profession with multiple applications. You might be surprised to know that even people who experience difficulties swallowing food and drink safely can benefit from seeing a speech pathologist.
