Frequently Asked Questions

We’re here to help. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, give us a call or send us your question through our contact form.

Do I need a GP Referral?

No, our specialists do not require a referral for consultation. However, if you’re concerned about out-of-pocket expenses, you can discuss your needs with your GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist.

Should your medical provider consider you eligible for a Medicare referral, you may have access to Medicare rebates that are subsidised by the Australian Government. You can also claim Private Health rebates (HICAPS) onsite at our clinic. Please check with your Private Health Fund for your general eligibility and cover.

What is Psychometric Assessment?

Psychometric assessment is a unique approach used by psychologists to understand an individual’s skills and areas of opportunity across various functional domains, including:

  • Cognitive (intelligence and thinking)
  • Educational
  • Behavioural
  • Social
  • Emotional

The educational and developmental psychologists at Scope specialise in assessment for:

  • Dyslexia and other learning disorders
  • Giftedness
  • Intellectual impairment
  • Cognitive and executive functions
  • Academic achievement

Psychometric assessment includes:

  • Collection of an individual’s developmental and educational history
  • Completion of a series of standardised tests and questionnaires
  • Interviews with relevant others (with permission), eg. teachers or allied health professionals

Assessments are available via appointment and are completed over 2 or 3 sessions followed by a feedback session. Assessments provide a comprehensive analysis of the person’s learning strengths and difficulties as well as recommended strategies for both remediation and appropriate support. Reports are typically completed within 3 weeks of the final assessment session.

Do I need Psychometric Assessment?

Individuals attending Scope for assessment have usually struggled with one or more of the keystone academic skill areas (e.g. reading, writing, spelling, mathematics) for an extended period of time. The degree to which they struggle is often unexpected given their apparent capabilities in other areas and the educational opportunities they have been provided with. It is also generally the case that attempts to remediate the difficulty have not been successful (or at least have been less successful than would have been expected).

Scope also offers a range of free symptom checklists for learning disorders.

Do you offer a Seniors discount?

Yes, we offer Seniors Card holders a 10% discount on all services.

Do you provide services through the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA)?

Yes – all dietetic and exercise physiology services are free for DVA gold card holders.
